So Canada is having it's 2nd election in less than two years. And it's the guy who won in 2019 who initiated it (so it's not like he resigned, was killed, etc).

It's pretty crazy that some leaders can just initiate an election just for the purpose of trying to get a majority. Compare the Canadian system with the US:
-There's no set 4yr cycle; the guy in power can basically call for an election at any time.
-And that campaign period! The election was called on Aug 15 2021, and is set for Sep 20 2021. Can you imagine if the US election cycle had to be condensed into ONE MONTH?

And of course, just the pure absurdity of having a totally optional election in the midst of a pandemic. All just for the chance of a few more seats in power.

That is fairly common for parliamentary systems.

As for the one-month duration: I would love it. The drawn out cycles require excessive funding and have too much dead time. It could all be condensed into 30 days plus any runoff if needed.

While it's true that the UK has had 2 two-year governments, in a row, they were quite stable before that, and seem to be back on track with the next elections in 2024. Japan went through PMs like candy, but their election cycles have been pretty consistent. The Aussies have been on a 3-yr cycle for a couple decades now. Italy and France have been on pretty stable cycles too.

I agree that the one month election period is good though. It basically means that you're running an election campaign all the time, so how you conduct yourself, even when there's no formal election going on, will cement how voters look at you, instead of a bunch of election promises that don't reflect your past actions.

Plus, it minimizes the amount of time representatives can take "time off" to work on their campaigns, and focus on serving their constituents.

Still, calling an election during a pandemic, just for the purpose of trying to win more power than you already have seems like borderline abuse of power.
